Believing God is With Us
“No one shall be able to stand against you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.” – Joshua 1:5 (ESV)
In Corrie ten Boom's book The Hiding Place, she recounts her experiences in Nazi concentration camps. Amidst the horrific conditions, she clung to the promise of God's presence. One particular incident stands out. She and her sister Betsie were assigned to a work detail that involved carrying heavy rocks. Corrie felt her strength failing, and she cried out to God for help. Suddenly, she felt a surge of energy, enabling her to carry the rocks with ease. Later, she discovered that Betsie, who was too weak to work, had been praying for Corrie's strength. This experience solidified Corrie's belief that even in the darkest of times, God is with us, providing the strength we need.
Joshua 1:1-5 emphasizes God's unwavering presence with Joshua as he takes leadership after Moses' death. God's repeated assurance, “I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you,” (v.5) echoes throughout the passage. Just as God was with Moses, He promises to be with Joshua, and by extension, with us. This promise isn't just about physical proximity; it's about empowering us, guiding us, and providing for us in the unknown. The phrase "just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you" underscores the continuity of God's faithfulness across generations. Fear often paralyzes us when facing the unfamiliar. We doubt our abilities and question God's plan. Today, choose to believe that God is with you, even in the midst of uncertainty. His presence is not contingent on your success or perfection; it's a constant promise for all who follow Him.
Reflection Questions:
1. What current situation in your life makes you feel uncertain or afraid?
2. How can consciously acknowledging God's presence bring you comfort and courage in this situation?
Suggested Prayer:
Lord, thank you for your promise to be with me always. Help me to trust in your presence, especially when I feel overwhelmed or afraid. Remind me that you are my constant companion and source of strength. Amen.

Knowing Our Calling
“Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:7 (ESV)
A pastor was struggling with the church's finances. He prayed fervently for guidance, and one day, while cleaning his garage, he stumbled upon an old woodworking set he'd received as a gift years ago. He’d never used it. A thought struck him: he could make small wooden crafts and sell them to raise money for the church. He started small, and to his surprise, his creations became quite popular. The proceeds not only helped the church's finances but also opened a new avenue for him to connect with his community. He discovered a hidden talent and a unique way to serve.
Joshua 1:6-7 calls Joshua to be “strong and very courageous,” and “being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.” This isn't just a general encouragement; it's a specific calling to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. God outlines the task and emphasizes obedience to His law as the key to success. Our calling may not be as dramatic as leading a nation, but it's equally important in God's eyes. It involves understanding our gifts, passions, and the opportunities God places before us.
Reflection Questions:
1. What are some of the gifts and talents God has given you?
2. How do you see these gifts aligning with the needs around you?
Suggested Prayer:
Lord, reveal to me the specific calling you have placed on my life. Help me to understand my gifts and use them to serve you and others. Give me the courage to step into the purpose you have designed for me. Amen.

Staying True to God's Word
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” – Joshua 1:8 (ESV)
A woman decided to memorize Psalm 23 about the Lord being her Shepherd. She wrote it out on index cards and stuck them all over her house – on the bathroom mirror, the refrigerator, even the dashboard of her car. At first, it seemed tedious, but as she repeated the verses day after day, they began to sink into her heart. Not only did she memorize the psalm, but the message of God's shepherding care began to transform her perspective. When she faced difficult situations, the words of the psalm would come to mind, bringing comfort and peace.
Joshua 1:8 emphasizes the importance of meditating on God's Word day and night. “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” It's not just about reading; it's about internalizing, reflecting, and applying its truths to our lives. The promise of blessing is directly linked to obedience to God's Word. The Bible becomes our roadmap, guiding us through the challenges and uncertainties of life.
Spend some time today reading and reflecting on a passage of Scripture. Ask God to show you how it applies to your current situation. Make a conscious effort to meditate on His Word and allow it to shape your thoughts and actions.
Reflection Questions:
1. What is one specific area of your life where you need guidance from God's Word?
2. How can you incorporate more regular Bible study and meditation into your daily routine?
Suggested Prayer: Lord, help me to treasure your Word and to meditate on it day and night. Give me the wisdom and understanding to apply its truths to my life. May your Word be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Amen.

Strength and Courage
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9 (ESV)
A group of friends decided to try indoor rock climbing. One of them, Sarah, was terrified of heights. As she looked up at the towering wall, her heart pounded, and her hands trembled. But her friends encouraged her, reminding her that they were there to support her and that the instructor would guide her. Taking a deep breath, Sarah started to climb. It was challenging, and she wanted to give up several times, but with each small victory, her confidence grew. She didn't reach the top, but she climbed much higher than she ever thought possible. The experience taught her that courage isn't the absence of fear; it's moving forward despite fear, knowing that support is available.
Joshua 1:9 reiterates the call to be strong and courageous. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” God doesn't just give us a task; He equips us with the strength and courage to accomplish it. The reminder, "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go," serves as a powerful antidote to fear and doubt. This verse emphasizes that God's presence is the source of our strength and courage. It's not about our own abilities or willpower, but about trusting in God's unwavering support. The phrase "Have I not commanded you?" underscores the importance of this call. It's not a suggestion; it's a directive from God.
Reflection Questions:
1. What is one area in your life where you need to be more courageous?
2. How can you draw strength from God's promise to be with you?
Suggested Prayer:
Lord, I thank you for your promise to strengthen and empower me. Give me the courage to face the challenges before me, knowing that you are with me always. Help me to trust in your unwavering presence. Amen.

Obedience and Blessing
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” – Joshua 1:8 (ESV)
A family decided to adopt a rescue dog. The dog had been mistreated and was very timid and anxious. The family knew it would take time and patience to earn the dog's trust. They followed the advice of the animal shelter, providing a safe space, consistent routines, and lots of positive reinforcement. Slowly but surely, the dog began to come out of its shell. It learned to trust its new family and eventually became a loving and playful companion. The family's faithful adherence to the recommended approach brought healing and joy to both the dog and themselves.
Joshua 1:8 links obedience to God's Word with prosperity and success. This verse isn't a guarantee of material wealth or worldly success. The "prosperity" and "good success" spoken of here are rooted in a deep relationship with God and a life lived according to His will. It's about experiencing the fullness of life that comes from aligning ourselves with His purposes. Obedience is not about blind adherence to rules; it's about recognizing God's wisdom and trusting that His ways are best, even when they don't make sense to us. Meditating on God's Word is essential for understanding His will and developing a heart of obedience.
Reflection Questions:
1. What is one area where God is prompting you to greater obedience?
2. How can you cultivate a heart of obedience to God's Word?
Suggested Prayer:
Lord, I desire to be obedient to your Word and your leading. Help me to trust in your wisdom and to follow your commands, knowing that your way leads to blessing. Thank you for your grace and guidance. Amen.
